CIS 507 Systems Analysis for Managers – Summer 2008
I. Catalog Description:
507. Systems Analysis for Managers. (3-2) Investigates and compares various analysis approach for application automation while highlighting management considerations for planning and developing automated systems. System life cycle models and case studies are used. Prerequisite: CIS 503 and 516 or approval of department head. Lab fee $15.
II. INTRODUCTION
This course will cover the basics of business systems analysis focused on designing and developing management systems. This course will (1) introduce, analyze, and comprehend the current approaches in the methods and practices of systems analysis, and (2) introduce the technical tools used in the field of systems analysis. The emphasis is on the critical analysis of systems, comprehension of the concepts, and application of the learned concepts to cases in the real world environment.
III. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR THE STUDENT
a. The student will be knowledgeable in the current methods and documentation requirements of systems analysis.
b. The student will be able to apply the appropriate method to a real world situation.
c. The students will be aware of software tools that are useful in the analysis of business systems.
IV. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
a. Text: Systems Analysis and Design, 7th Ed., Kendall & Kendall,
Prentice-Hall, 2007 ISBN 0-13-244085-8
b. Several double-sided, double density 1.44M 3.5” or Zip diskettes to keep work on.
V. GENERAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS
a. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Class attendance is certainly recommended but not required.
You are responsible for any materials discussed on days you miss.
b. Reading Assignments – All assigned chapters will be used as basis for class discussion.
c. Class participation – All students will be required to participate in class, do board work and/or present using the DataShow machine.
d. Examinations – Three exams will be given during the semester. Makeup exams will be given ONLY when arrangements have been made PRIOR to the class meeting.
e. Homework – There will be several homework assignments, both individual and team projects. Homework is due AT THE BEGINNING of the class period. Late homework will have 10% per day late deducted from the score, and is not accepted more than 1 week late.
f. Project - Students will be organized into teams for team projects about a systems analysis solution that will be written up for turn-in and also presented to the rest of the class. Each team will select a leader, and will have meetings inside and outside of class time. The project is due as given on the master schedule. See separate web page for details on requirements.
g. A term research paper will be required for each student, due as given on the master schedule. See separate web pages for details on requirements.
h. Scholastic Honesty – All students are expected to maintain the highest standards of scholastic honesty in the preparation of all course work and and during examinations. Violations will be handled according to university policy.
For all your homework assignments and examinations, write only on one side of the paper, and clearly write your name on the top right of each page. Furthermore number your pages “Page N of M”, where N is the page number starting at 1, and M is the total number of pages. Carefully identify all your answers.

Makeup exams will be given when arrangements have been made with the instructor PRIOR to the class meeting. Assignment are due AT THE BEGINNING of the class, and loose 5% per day there after.
