Cataloging
The cataloging department is responsible for providing bibliographic access to the Tarleton State University Libraries collections through the cataloging of materials and the development and maintenance of the bibliographic databases.  This includes creating new monographic records, maintaining existing records for books, maps, monographs, scores, sound recordings, video recordings, graphics, computer files, and microfilm. Periodicals are cataloged by the Head of Periodicals and Education items are cataloged by the Division Head for Special Services.

In addition to overseeing the bibliographic database, the cataloging department head is responsible for compiling monthly statistical reports required by the University and other state agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Which classification systems does the University Library use for books and materials?

Answer: The majority of the collection is classified using the Library of Congress (LC) Systems.  Periodicals are not classified, but are shelved alphabetically.

How are materials cataloged by the Library?

Answer: We use cataloging records provided by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), a national bibliographic database.  These records are downloaded into our local online system SIRSI.

Can a book or other item by "rush" cataloged?

Answer: If a professor needs an item "rush" cataloged for a class, contact Ms. Glenda Stone or another member of the Technical Services Division.  We will expedite the cataloging and processing of the needed item.
