ArtLex Dictionary of Visual Arts - Get the definitions of over 2,500 art terms from this commercial site. Also includes illustrations, pronunciation notes, quotations, and links to other resources on the Web.

ArtSource - Based at the University of Kentucky, this site has numerous links to art, architecture and museum resources.

Artchive - The Artchive is divided into: Theory & Criticism (art criticism), Galleries (online exhibitions), Juxtapositions (commentary on art), Art CD-ROM Reviews, and Art Links.

WebMuseum - Originally based in Paris, this is one of the best art collections on the Internet, with multiple mirror sites. This link is actually a mirror site at the University of North Carolina. This site has two main sections, Special Exhibits and General Exhibitions. The Famous Paintings exhibition has an artist index, a glossary of art terms and a theme index. Each period of art has a brief description with significant characteristics and artists. Each artist page includes a brief biography, significant contributions and graphic files of the artist's work.

Architecture

Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape, 1922-1932 - This project was organized jointly by the Library of Congress, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The plans featured here, a prototypical suburb, resorts, an automobile objective, a desert retreat were chosen because they embody Wright's changing views of the fundamental relationship between building and land. Images and explanatory text are included.

Renaissance and Baroque Architecture: Architectural History 102 - From the University of Virginia, School of Architecture, no text, but an excellent collection of images of architecture from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Timeline of Art History - is a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, as illustrated especially by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.

World Art Treasures - Hosted by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the principal purpose of World Art Treasures is to promulgate the discovery and love of art. At the core of this site is the Jacques-Edouard Berger Foundation slide collection, the source of the images at this site, which includes art from Egypt, China, Japan, India, and Europe.

Boticelli: The Drawings - From the World Art Treasures site, hosted by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, view some of Boticelli's drawings, in this case, studies for paintings.

Leonardo da Vinci Drawings - This site covers da Vinci drawings only, although it does have links to other da Vinci sites.

Dallas Museum of Art - exhibitions, collections, and programs presented by the Dallas Museum of Art.

Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center - a part of Tarleton State University located in Granbury, Texas which exhibits art, provides classrooms for community education and for academics.

Museums

Art Institute of Chicago Museum - One of the great art museums of the world, the Art Institute of Chicago presents a collection spanning 5,000 years of artistic expression. Paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures, photographs, video, textiles, and architectural drawings and fragments are complemented by a year-round schedule of exhibitions.

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco - This is a joint site of the Legion of Honor and De Young museums. Access exhibit, collection and education information. Of more interest is the growing catalogue of the collections, the art Imagebase, which currently  holds over 60,000 images.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art - Get information on: Exhibitions, Music, Films, Education, and Other Events. Of most interest are the Exhibitions: Past & Present, which include the museum's own masterpieces, as well as travelling exhibits. Images and excellent summary information on the art and/or artists is included. The Mexican Masterpieces from the Bernard and Edith Lewin Collection is especially well done.

Louvre Museum - Perhaps the most famous museum in the world, the Louvre also has an excellent web site. Get the usual general museum and exhibit information and more. Of most interest are the select works of art displayed from each of the seven fabulous collections of the Louvre: Oriental Antiquities and Islamic Art; Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; and, covering the modern period, Paintings, Sculptures, Objets d'art and Prints and Drawings. In addition, there is a section dedicated to the history of the Louvre.

Metropolitan Museum of Art - Get excellent general information on exhibits, hours and even walking tours, or access descriptions of each collection and select masterpieces from the Met, which includes more than two million works of art spanning more than 5,000 years of world culture, from prehistory to the present.

Museum of Fine Arts Boston  - Get information on: Collections, Exhibitions, General Info, Shop, and the Museum School. Take a tour of the museum by accessing collections and clicking on the interactive map, where select pieces can be viewed.

Museum of Modern Art - This multi-award winning, well designed web site provides information on museum exhibitions, programs and events, online projects, research resources, publications and more. As with most of the museum sites, the highlights are from this premier collection of modern art, including select images of MoMA's collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and design objects.

National Gallery of Art - The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has one of the finest collections in the world of paintings, sculptures, and graphic arts from the Middle Ages to the present. This well designed web site can be searched by specific artist, title, or a combination of criteria. Tour the collection by medium and school, or choose a foreign language guide (PDF format) for your visit. Also get general information, such as hours, exhibits and more.

Smithsonian Institution - America's national educational facility with 19 museums, 9 research centers and over 140 affiliate museums around the world.

Tate Gallery - The Tate holds the national collections of British Art and of international modern art, with galleries in London, Liverpool and St Ives. A huge online collection of the gallery's art, currently more than 7000 works, with more to come. Note: Due to copyright restrictions images of some artist's work is not represented. One may also access the usual museum information, such as hours, upcoming exhibitions and more.

Virtual Uffizi - This growing web site of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy displays not only a fabulous Italian Renaissance collection, but other artists such as Rembrandt, Goya, and Rubens. Click on a room in the Rooms Index to see a list of the works available, and click on the work itself to get: author (artist), period, title, type, notes, and a link to see an image of the work.

Photography

America's First Look into the Camera: Daguerreotype Portraits and Views 1839-1864 - Part of the Library of Congress' American Memory Project, this excellent collection consists of approximately 600 photographs dating from 1839 to 1864, mainly from the  Mathew Brady studio. The collection also includes early architectural views by John Plumbe, a few outdoor scenes, and copies of painted portraits. The site is searchable by keyword, or browsable by subject.

Ansel Adams - Part of the 0larger Orazio Centaro's Art Images on the Web site, find numerous links to sites about Ansel Adams or to specific works of the master photographer.

Creative Americans: Portraits by Carl Van Vechten, 1932-1964 - Part of the Library of Congress' American Memory Project, view 1,400 Portraits of literary figures, artists, and celebrities; scenic views, mostly in the Northeast. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of celebrities, including many figures from the Harlem Renaissance. Search by keywords or browse the subject or occupational index.

The Daguerrian Society - Everything you always wanted to know about daguerreotypes. Probably of the most interest are the galleries and resources. The galleries are arranged by theme, such as The American Vision or European Daguerreotypes. Resources include daguerreotype bibliography, thumbnail history, the daguerreian process and more.

A History of Photography - This site, based in the UK by a member of the Royal Photographic Society, gives an excellent overview of the history of photography from the beginning to the 1920's, as well as photographic terms and techniques. The site is divided into three main sections: The beginnings of photography, Significant people in the early history of photography, and Significant processes, styles and movements in photography.

Life Remembers Eisie: Over 50 Years of Putting Our Lives in Pictures - From Life magazine, this is a tribute to famed Life photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt. This site includes: A LIFE Biography of Eisenstaedt, Front Page: Eisenstaedt's Most Celebrated Cover Photos for LIFE, The V-J Day Kiss: 50 Years Later, and People By Alfred Eisenstaedt: A Portfolio.

Time Life Photo Sight - From Time Life, 20 million photographs gathered or taken on assignment for Time Inc. magazines. Of special interest, Great Photographers in the photo gallery, covering such photographers as Jock Carroll, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Lee Lockwood.

Touring Turn-of-the-Century America: Photographs from the Detroit Publishing Company, 1880-1920 - Part of the Library of Congress' American Memory Project, view over 25,000 glass negatives and transparencies as well as about 300 color photolithograph prints, mostly of the eastern United States. The University of Montana Museum of Fine Arts Photograph Collection - A small but excellent collection of photographs, including works by the great early photographer, Eugene Atget.

Prints & Printmaking

Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century - From the University of Delaware Library, this exhibition defines the Intaglio, Relief, Lithography, and nature printing and Photomechanical processes, accompanied by images of prints to illustrate the technique.

Honoré Daumier - Part of the larger University of Montana Museum of Fine Arts Print Collection, view 100 Daumier prints.

Printing: Renaissance & Reformation - From the University of South Carolina Library, the collection is divided into eight "islands" which include images and descriptions of 15th, 16th and 17th century printing.

The University of Montana Museum of Fine Arts Print Collection - This site includes work dated from the early 1500's as well as examples of contemporary artists' work. One of the highlights is the Daumier collection, but it also includes examples of such artists as Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec. Also note the link to WPA Period Prints.
