HEALTH (HLTH) 
101. 
Wellness for Life The study of principles and techniques needed to
 
promote human health and hygiene. Topics will include, but not be limited
 
to: fitness assessment and skills; personal awareness and management
 
techniques, self motivation, proper nutrition, responsibility, and healthy  
 
choices as they relate to wellness. Health related physical fitness laboratories
 
for skills and strategies will be conducted. Lab fee required (F,Sp,Sm)

First Aid A course to provide an understanding of first aid and
 
emergency procedures, including theory and practice, given to victims of
 
accident and illness. Lab fee required.

Principles of Health and Fitness for Children
 
Prerequisite: Jr. classification or approval of department head
 
A survey of the essential knowledge and skills of health and physical education
 
as they relate to children ages 6 to 14. Included will be skills related to
 
personal health and safety, physical fitness, motor development, games and
 
sports, gymnastics, and rhythmic activities.

  Theory Courses
200 Foundations of Exercise and Sports Studies
  An introductory course in Exercise and Sports Studies. Included will be a
  history of physical education and sport; health-related fitness concepts;
  nutrition for sport and athletics; stress management techniques; and objectives
212 Introduction to Athletic Training
  This course is a prerequisite for entrance into the Tarleton Athletic
  Training/Sports Medicine licensure program. It serves as a survey of the
  athletic training profession and the skills involved in the care of the athlete and
  physically active. Lab fee required (F)

218. Theory of Gymnastics and Dance
  Prerequisite: PED 1192
  Theory and practice of skills in basic gymnastics and tumbling; dance activities
including square dane, folk, and country-western dance. (F,Sp,Sm)

  Concentration on skills and techniques in coaching football. (SP)

227 Sports Officiating  
  A course designed to teach the rules and mechanics of sports officiating in
  football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball/softball. Students will be required
  to assist in a variety of officiating activities outside the formal classroom.
228  Coaching Softball
  Concentration on skills and techniques in coaching softball.
230 Motor Behavior
  Prerequisite: PED 2003 or approval of department head.
  A study of the behavioral characteristics for skill acquisition due to motor,
  physical and neuromuscular development. Application of instructional
  techniques with children in a school setting is a part of this course. (F,SP,Sm)

250. Games and Activities for Children (3-0)
  A course designed to acquaint the student with the underlying theory and
  principles of play activities for children and to introduce the student to a variety
  of games and activities for children. (F)
310 Tests and Measurements
  Prerequisite: 12 hours of Physical Education course work and junior class.
  Use and function of tests in Exercise and Sport Studies. Test construction and
  interpretation will be studied. Statistical techniques will be reviewed.

312 Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries
  Prerequisite: BIOL 2194 & 2204 and PED 2313
  The study and application of skills in the prevention and care of injuries
  affecting the athlete and physically active. (F,SP)

313 Assessment of Athletic Injuries and Illnesses
  Prerequisites: PED 213, 312, BIOL 219, 220
  The study and application of principles and techniques fo assessment of athletic
  injuries and illnesses including signs and symptoms, classification of injuries and
  illnesses, emergency assessment, and clinical assessment.
314 Therapeutic Exercise
  Prerequisites: PED 213, 312, BIOL 219, 220
  The study and application of therapeutic exercise techniques in the rehabiliation
  of athletic injuries including restoration of range of motion, muscular strength and
  endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, neuromuscular control and balance.
320. Theory of Strength and Conditioning
  Prerequisites: BIOL 219 or 220, HLTH 231
  The study and survey of comtemporary strength training and conditioning.
  Successful completion of the course allows the student to sit for the appropriate
  examinations relative to being ceritified as a Strength and Conditioning
  specialist.
326 Outdoor Adventure ( linked to site)
  Prerequisite: HLTH 2313 or approval of department head
  Techniques and application of an instruction process using activities in the
  natural environment to promote and enhance educational, sociological,
  recreational, and overall personal growth of the participant. (F,SP,)
  Lab fee required.
340. Integrated Movement Activities.
  Prerequisite: PED 2503 or approval of department head.
  A study of movement experiences designed to integrate concepts of exercise 
  and sport studies with language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art,
  and music. (F,SP)
380 Adaptive, Corrective, and Developmental Exercise. (2-2)
  Prerequisite: PED 2303.
  A study of the behavioral characteristics, causes, needs and corrective
  strategies for individuals with disabling conditions. Practical application with
  special needs individuals is a course requirement. (F,SP)

405. Practicum in Exercise and Sports Studies
  Prerequisites: Senior classification and approval of department head.
  Practicum in the exercise and sport studies activity program involving a
  demonstrated proficiency in a variety of activities related to exercise and sport.

4124. Therapuetic Modalities
  Prerequisites: PED 213, 312, BIOL 219, 220
  The study of therapuetic modalities in the care of athletic injuries including
  psychological aspects, healing process, pain control, superficial cold and hear,
  electrotherapy, ultrasound, mechanical energy, and biofeedback.
413 Management in Athletic Training
  Prerequisites: Approval of Director of Athletic Training Education Program
  A study of the principlies and application of knowledge and skills necessary to
  to manage an athletic training program including areas of finance, information,
  insurance, human resources, faclities, ethics, and legal considerations
414 Clinical Experince in Athletic Training
Prerequisites: Approval of Director of Athletic Training Education Program
  Clincial experience in athletic training undera ppropriate supervidsion of qualified
  professionals in collegiate, high school, and clinical settings.
416 Individual and Team Sport Skills
  Prerequisites: 18 hours of PED course work or approval of department head.
  A course designed to acquaint the student with a variety of individual and team
sport activities. Included will be history, strategies, and physical skills related
to those activities along with foundations of exercise. Designed as a course
  prior to student teaching. (F,SP)

420 Physiology of Exercise
  Prerequisites: BIOL 2194, 2204.
  Effects of physical exercise on body processes. (F,SP,Sm)

  Prerequisites: P ED 4203 or approval of department head.
  Physiology of exercise in the treatment of the degenerative effects of sedentary
  lifestyles associated with chronic disease and/or disabilities.

440 Exercise Electrocardiography
  Prerequisites: BIOL 2194 or 2204, Hlth 2313, PED 4203
  A study of the rate, rhythm, axis, and pathophysiology of the heart obtained
  during graded exercise testing. (SP)
470. The Organization and Administration of Exercise and Sports Programs
  Prerequisites: 12 hours of Physical Education or senior classification.
  Principles, practices, and procedures in the organization and administration of
  exercise and sports programs. (F,SP,Sm)
480 Kinesiology
  Prerequisites: BIOL 2194, 2204,
  Investigation and analysis of human motion in relationship to structure and
  function according to general mechanical laws and other factors. (F,SP,Sm)
482. Internship in Exercise and Sports Studies
  Prerequisites: Senior classification and approval of department head.
  Supervised internship with selected agencies and organizations such as
  intramural sports, city recreation departments, centers, and similar agencies
  and organizations. (F,SP,Sm)
485 Seminar (credit variable)
  Prerequisites: Junior level standing or approval of department head
  This course will focus on current tipics and issues of interest in exercise and
  sports studies. It may be repeated for credit as topics change.
486. Problems (Credit variable)
  Directed study of selected problems in Physical Education. May be repeated
  for credit with approval of department head. Restricted to Physical Education
  majors and minors.
