The Department of Health and Physical Education at Tarleton State University offers a Masters of Education Degree (M.Ed.), designed especially for those students who have completed an undergraduate degree in Physical Education. The major objective of the Master of Education Degree in Physical Education is to promote the professional growth of teachers, administrators, and exercise specialists. For those students who desire a M.Ed. Degree in Physical Education, but who do not have an undergraduate degree in PED, a minimum of 18 undergraduate, professional hours in Physical Education is required.
Members of the graduate faculty in the Department of Health and Physical Education serve as advisors to graduate students in the Department with Dr. Ron Newsome serving as the Director of the Graduate Program within the Department. In addition to the requirements for any other graduate student at Tarleton State University (see current catalogue), a graduate student in the Department of Health and Physical Education shall follow these guidelines.
1. At the completion of at least 12 semester hours ( this rule varies from department to department) of graduate degree work and/or full admission to the graduate school, the student shall select.a chairperson of his/her advisory committee. The chairperson must be a member of the graduate faculty and a member of the Department of Health and Physical Education. In consultation with the chairperson, the remainder of the advisory committee will be selected. At least one of the additional two committee members must be from the graduate faculty in the Department of Health and Physical Education, and each of the two additional faculty members must be a member of the graduate faculty at Tarleton State University.
2. A degree plan will then be filed after the admission to candidacy is granted, provided all other departmental and university requirements are statified.
3. The advisory committee has the responsibility for the degree program and for the comprehensive testing of the student prior to the conferral of the degree.
4. Each candidate for an M.Ed. Degree in Physical Education must pass a written and/or an oral comprehensive examination during the semester.in.which graduation is anticipated. Failure of the student to perform satisfactorily on the written exam will result in an oral examination to be ad.ministered within a resaonable length of time following notification of one's performance on the written exam. (see comprehensive Exam.Section)
5. Either the Department Chair or the Director of the Graduate Program will select the dates for the written examination each semester, .including the summer sessions.
Graduate School Admission Requirements

1. Submit the "Application for Graduate Study" form by deadline in current catalogue (form available from the Graduate Office, Room 141, Administration Building).
2. Pay required application processing fee when submitting application.
3. Submit all official transcripts of undergraduate and/or graduate work (undergraduate transcript must bear date of bachelor's degree conferral).
4. Submit scores on Graduate Record Exam (GRE) to graduate office.
5. Submit to Graduate Office a writing sample. (see writing sample below)

General Admission Guidelines and Procedures of the College of Graduate Studies (Effective September 1, 2000) |
After completing the required application materials, the Graduate Office will determine the graduate status of the applicant based on any and/or all of the following criteria:
1. Undergraduate GPA--The GPA will be calculated on all courses included in the semester in which the last of the 60 hours of undergraduate work were taken.
2. The higher of the Quantitative or Analytical Score will be used.
If the applicant does not meet the printed criteria for full admission to the Graduate College, he/she MIGHT be granted CONDITIONAL ADMISSION.
1. If there is no GRE Score but the applicant has a 3.0 or higher undergraduate GPA on his/her last 60 hours of undergraduate work, he/she MAY BE granted conditional admission. That student will be eligible to enroll in graduate school for just one semester without a GRE score on file. He/she will be limited to enrollment in no more that 6 hours of graduate work and will be required to make at least a 3.0 in those hours. For that student, a GRE Score must be submitted by the following dates or the student will be blocked from further registration for graduate courses. The deadline for submitting GRE scores is as follows:
Fall-November 1....Spring-April 1..... Summer-July 1
2. Applicants with a GPA of less than 3.0 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work and with no GRE score will be denied admission to the Graduate College.
3. The same admission criteria will apply to the provisionally admitted undergraduate student within 12 hours of obtaining his/her degree who wants to begin work in the Graduate College.
4. A student who has been denied admission to the Graduate College may appeal. Appeals must be made in writing to the Graduate Dean.
WRITING SAMPLE (Qualitative Requirement)
1. All applicants will be required to submit an essay as a part of the application package. All former students who are re-applying because of absence from the program for more than one year will be asked to provide a writing sample as well. The essay provided by the applicant is to be from 200-300 words. The topic for the essay should address "personal goals for graduate study and career goals."
2. If the essay is not submitted as a part of the application package, the student will be conditionally admitted until the sample is submitted and evaluated. Any further registration for graduate classes will be denied until the sample is supplied and evaluated.

General Degree Requirements for M.Ed. Degree in Physical Education |
In order to pursue an M.Ed. Degree in Physical Educcation, a student should have completed at least 18 undergraduate hours in professional Physical Education, Exercise and Sports Studies, Physiology, Kinesiology, and/or a related field. A student who desires an M.Ed. Degree in Physical Eduction who does not have at least 18 hours of undergraduate work in Physical Education and/or a related field must do leveling work (additional undergraduate hours in Physical Education) until a minimum of 18 hours is reached.
1. A minimum of 18 graudate hours in Physical Education.
2. Of the 18 hours required in Physical Education
....a. 3 hours must be PED 501-Readings in Health & Physcial Educaton
....b. 3 hours must be PED 535-Advanced Test and Measurements In Health & Physical Education
3. In addition, all students seeking an M.Ed. Degree in Physical Education must successfully complete EDU 598-Techniques of Research.
4. Those students opting not to write a thesis will complete a total of 36 graduate hours (at least 12 courses).
5. A student opting to write a thesis will complete 30 hours (at least 10 courses) of graduate work plus 6 hours of thesis work. The student must enroll in PED 588-Thesis for a minimum of two semesters).
6. A student may begin graduate studies in Physical Education when within 12 hours of an undergraduate degree in Physical Education or .when within 6 hours of completing his/her 18 hours of undergraduate leveling work in Physical Education.
7. With appropriate approval, courses at the 3000 and/or 4000 levels in Physical Education may be used for graduate credit. Students who use.such courses for graduate credit must complete additional course requirements over and above those requirements required for undergraduate credit. No more than 6 hours (two courses) at the 3000 and /or 4000 levels may be used for graduate credit. A 3000 or 4000 level course used for leveling purposes cannot also be used for graduate credit.
8. No more than 12 hours (four courses) of transfer graduate work from another institution will be accepted for an M. Ed.Degree in Physical .Education.
9. A student with a masters degree in an area other than Physical Education who desires an M.Ed. Degree in Physical Education may use no.more than 6 hours (two courses) earned toward the previous masters degree.
10. A student desiring a M.Ed Degree in Physical Education can use no more than 6 hours (two courses) of Problems work toward his/her.degree.
11. A graduate student in Physical Education who has no credit for computer science as an undergraduate student is encouraged to take CIS 5013.Computer Information Systems as a part of his/or her graduate program.
12. A graduate student in Physical Education who has completed at least 13 hours in computer science as an undergraduate is encouraged to take.CIS 5153-Development of Information Systems Applications as a part of his/or her graduate program.
13. A student seeking an M. Ed. Degree in Physical Education must complete degree requirements within a six year period from the time.he/she attempts his/her first graduate course which is to be applied to the degree.
