Program Information

The Honors Degree Program offers Honors sections of most core curriculum subjects, including math, English, political science, history, chemistry, biology, physics, speech, psychology, and sociology.  Honors classes offer students intellectually challenging material, innovative approaches to the subject, increased opportunities for honing critical thinking and writing skills, and the opportunity to interact closely with similarly motivated students.  As a rule Honors classes emphasize discussion and student participation, primary sources and monographs over textbooks, special lab equipment that would not be available to most science students until graduate school, student projects and research, and essay exams over multiple choice.

All Tarleton students who have a 3.0 Tarleton GPA are eligible for Honors classes.  Students with a lower GPA may register for an Honors class with the permission of the instructor.  Incoming freshmen who've graduated in the top quarter of their class or scored a composite SAT of 1100 or a combined ACT of 24 or higher are eligible to participate in the program.  Qualified incoming freshmen are invited to participate in a special honors orientation, and, on a space available basis, are invited to live in the honors wing of Centennial Hall.

Honors classes are officially designated on the student's permanent transcript.  Any student who completes 18 or more hours of such classes with a minimum 3.0 GPA in Honors classes and an overall Tarleton GPA of 3.0 will receive recognition as an Honors Degree Program graduate.

In addition to the Honors sections of the core curriculum courses, students who have completed at least four of these basic Honors courses may take one upper-level special problems course for Honors credit with permission of the department head and the director of the Honors Degree Program.  Also, students with a 3.4 Tarleton GPA or higher may apply to take the special Honors Seminars that are offered each spring.

Recommendation from the Tarleton pre-law advisor, Dr. Charles Howard:

"Law school admissions directors will look favorably on honors classes and honors degrees. So taking honors classes will help you in this respect. In addition the honors classes will help develop reading and writing skills necessary for a strong LSAT performance. We recommend the honors sections of English 1123, Coms 1013, Hist 2013 & 2023, and Pols 2013 and 2023. Take as many of these as you can."
