Providing support for educational and cultural enrichment

for the Presidential Honors Program

PURPOSE

The Presidential Honors Enrichment Society provides support for educational and cultural enrichment for the students in Tarleton’s honors programs and, indirectly, for the entire university community. Supplementing the challenging academic work that honors students do in their classes, this support makes it possible to provide broad and challenging educational experiences that will prepare them, not just for their careers, but for the leadership roles they will play in their communities.

The Presidential Honors Enrichment Society provides support for:

Presidential Honors Visiting Scholars

This program establishes a permanent relation with distinguished individuals who come to our campus on a regular basis to give public lectures and guest class lectures, conduct workshops, teach the Honors Seminar, and otherwise provide an intense educational enrichment for our honors students, and, in many cases, for the general Tarleton community, that would not be otherwise available.  For more information about the Visiting Scholars, go to Presidential Honors Visiting Scholars.

Student travel to academic conferences

Greater support in this area provides greater opportunity for student participation in conferences in their academic discipline and in the national and regional honors organizations (the National Honors Council and the Great Plains Honors Council).

Student travel to other educational and cultural events and participation in educational programs

Greater support in this area allows us to send more students to professional meetings, to the opera or the symphony, to Austin or to Washington to sit in on our state or national government, to another country to study.

Conferences, workshops, lectures, and other educational events on the Tarleton campus and in the community

Exposure to intelligent and thoughtful discussion of important issues is an essential part of a first-rate education. That happens in Tarleton classes on a daily basis, but the Presidential Honors Enrichment Society support will enable us to supplement those discussions with special events featuring scholars from other campuses, knowledgeable public figures from both the private and public sectors, writers, artists and performers, journalists, and other distinguished individuals our students would not get to see face-to-face. It will also allow us to sponsor events of this nature in the community, both locally and in the region, for example, "Meet the Music" a lecture series by Dr. Punch Shaw at Borders in Fort Worth.

OTHER FORMS OF GIVING

In addition to contributions to the Presidential Honors Enrichment Society, we welcome contributions to the Presidential Honors Activities Fund, an endowment fund that also generates funding for educational and cultural enrichment for the students in Tarleton’s honors programs and, indirectly, for the entire university community. This fund was originally set up by Dr. Alice Cushman, Professor Emeritus of English at Tarleton. Opportunities also exist to contribute to an endowment fund that generates funding for Presidential Honors scholarships.
