For
the past year, Information Resources, in consultation with
the University Project Management Committee, the
President’s Council and other members of the Tarleton
community reviewed the cost and usage of Tarleton’s dial-up
services. As a result of the increased availability of
high-speed connectivity from commercial providers, the
usage of the university’s dial-up service has seen a steady
decline. The equipment that provides this service is nine
years old and support is no longer available from the
manufacturer. To ensure its continued reliable operation, a
significant expenditure would be required to upgrade the
service. The monthly communication costs to continue to
offer dial-up services are also significant. Faced with
these realities, the decision has been made to discontinue
dial-up services to the university community. Tarleton's
Stephenville dial-up service is being decommissioned
effective September 1, 2007.
There are a number of commercial providers who offer
reliable Internet services at reasonable costs and higher
speeds than those available at the University. Current
users of Tarleton’s dial-up service are encouraged to begin
the search for a replacement provider well before the
scheduled shut down date of September 1, 2007.
The University is allocating resources to invest in more
up-to-date technology for students, faculty, and staff.
This includes expanding wireless coverage for the campus
and offering improved tools for electronic communications.
The University is committed to offering a robust,
collaborative technological environment to the Tarleton
community.
