DISABILITIES/OFFICE OF COMPLIANCE.  Any student with a documented disability who may need academic accommodation, must register with the Office of Compliance, Room 15 Barry B. Thompson Student Center Building (phone 968-9480).  The last day to request academic accommodations for each term corresponds to the last day for dropping a course with no record.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Each student will be expected to attend all scheduled class sessions at the student's own discretion.  However, class attendance can be looked upon as a method of obtaining extra credit.  Students with good attendance records tend to be evaluated somewhat differently than students without good attendance records.  (see below)
COURSE OBJECTIVE:  The objective of this course is for each student to be able to know, comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate principles and techniques of the management and administration of compensation within present-day organizations.
TEACHING/LEARNING METHODOLOGIES:  The following methods will be employed:  Lectures, class discussion, class discussion of cases, in-class group experiential activities, videos, individual oral presentations and individual written reports of individual research.
GRADING CRITERIA:  The student's level of learning for each specific dimension of the course objective (stated above) will be demonstrated by attaining at least 60% of all potential points as prescribed below, [i. e.  (K) Knowledge, © Comprehension, (A) Application/Analysis, (S) Synthesis/Evaluation].  The grade received in this class will be determined as follows:  The weights to be assigned to each of these components will be assigned by each student on an individual basis.  This approach to the assigning of weights for the various learning evaluation components is in recognition that individuals have unique learning styles.  Some students learn best through visual stimuli, while other students learn best through use of the other senses.  Most learn best through the use of some combination of the various senses.  Your preference for the weighting of each of these components will be recorded by use of the Individual Evaluation Component Weighting Form which will be completed and turned in during the first part of the semester; if not turned in at the time called for, the default weights will apply.  You should record your percentage weights in the blanks following each item on your syllabus copy before turning in the weighting form.

Individually based activities:

 1)    (K,C,S) Exams (totally objective type, i.e. multiple choice and/or true/false items, over text material).  For each exam, a one page crib sheet, eight and one-half by eleven inches, front and back, will be permitted to use while taking scheduled exams.
        %weight 05 to 45 (_____)    default 29%

2)(C,A,S) Weekly Typed Article Summary Reports (10 or so in total).  Throughout this course students will be expected to read and review the current literature, i.e., human resource management and business related periodicals,  journals and/or the Wall Street Journal.  This will be an individual based assignment and will require the submission of a one-page, maximum length, typed, double-spaced article summary critique/review in the student’s own words with complete (!) acceptable bibliographic information (see below).  Along with the review a "Xerox" copy of each article would be appreciated but is not required.  A two to three minute informal oral presentation of each article also may be presented to the class, depending upon available time.
        %weight 05 to 15 (_____)   default 10%

 3)    (K,C) Pop quizzes, covering assigned text material, other material covered in class or in-class videos are possible during any regularly scheduled class period on a random basis.
        %weight 05 to 20 (_____)     default 13%

(K,C,A,S) Attendance/Participation.  The percentage of your attendance, along with classroom participation /instructor discretion, will be used in determining this part of your overall score.

Group based activities:

 4)    (C,A,S) Semester research report paper, 9 to 10 pages minimum, typed, double-spaced, lines with a 12 point font.  This assignment will be one of the major group projects for the semester.  The audience for your paper will have little knowledge of the area you are researching.  For all sources used, appropriate acknowledgment will be expected; meaning: appropriate footnotes or endnotes along with a bibliography! Note: The weekly article reports can also be used as sources for this assignment.   (M.L.A. style guidelines can be used as a suggested approach to style)
        BIBLIOGRAPHIC EXAMPLE:
Article, Author of.  "Article Title."  Journal/Periodical Name,  Volume and number, (or Month date, Year), page number(s).
The topics will be appropriate to the area of human resource management, preferably some aspect of the compensation function, subject to approval.  Each team will also make an oral presentation of the results of their research project to the class.  This assignment will be due at the end of the next to the last week of the semester.
        %weight 05 to 45 (_____)    default 29%

 5)    (K,C) Each group will also submit written answers to the end of chapter discussion questions for the chapters covered on each exam on the day of the exam.
        %weight 05 to 15 (_____)    default 9%

 6)    (K,C,A) Individual scores for in-class group experiential activities based upon various topics presented in the text.  These will be explained further prior to each such activity, but can be found sprinkled throughout the text at the end of chapters.
        %weight 05 to 15 (_____)    default 10%

General course policies:
    ●    Late work will be accepted but with a significant point reduction.
    ●    Exams which are missed may be made up at the end of the semester during the final exam period.
    ●    In addition to the above course requirements, a digital image (formally known as a “picture”) must be on file with the professor in order for a letter grade other than an “F” or a “W”  to be received in this course.  Your digital image can be made in class on the day announced for digital images to be made.  Another option is for a student to email a favorite digital image to the above email addresses.
Grades will be earned as follows:
0-59* =F;  60-69* =D;  70-79* =C;  80-89* =B; 90-100* =A.
       *(% of total possible points)
Tentative Assignment Schedule of Topics and Text Material:
The material in the Course Text will be covered sequentially as presented in the text starting with Chapter 1, subject to change.  Plan on reading ahead in the text at least one chapter beyond the current chapter. Newspaper Business-Related
Cartoon Assignment for Extra Credit
(Strictly voluntary)
During the semester you will be encouraged to search for newspaper cartoons and/or comic strips related directly to a specific business discipline or area.  The final judgement concerning whether or not your chosen newspaper cartoons are directly related to a business discipline will be made by your professor.  The policies under which this assignment will be governed are as follows:

 1.    An opportunity at the beginning of each class period will be devoted to newspaper cartoon/comic strip presentation time.  Any student desiring to present a newspaper cartoon/comic strip will volunteer at the start of the class period.  It will not be up to the professor, necessarily, to call upon students.  The student or students bringing newspaper cartoon/comic strips for points will present them to the class.  The newspaper cartoon/comic strips will then be turned in with the student's name and NEWSPAPER SOURCE FROM WHICH IT WAS TAKEN LISTED on the reverse side.  These guidelines will be strictly observed in order for a newspaper cartoon/comic strip to be eligible to count toward the total for a particular class period.

 2.    The newspaper sources from which this assignment may be obtained will be limited to newspapers which are not older than seven days immediately preceding the current class period.

 3.    Method for computing credit:
    a.    Credit will be earned in the form of "Point Credits (PCS)".  Each PC can be used to offset points missed for an incorrect response to items on a test.

    b.    A Point Credit account will be maintained for each student during the semester and a maximum of 10 PCS will be applied to any one exam.  PCS earned at any time during the semester will be applied first to the first exam score below 100% then to the next exam and so on.  In other words PCS will be used retroactively.

    c.    PCS will be awarded as follows:
PCS awarded to individual students will be based upon the total number of different newspaper cartoon/comic strips, which are directly related to a business discipline, presented by participating students for each class period according to the following schedule:
            Total Toons        PCS/Participant
              01 to 03            03
              04 to 06            04
              07+                   05
The number brought by individual students will not be a determinant.  Therefore, individual students may present as many cartoon/comic strips as desired.  The total number of different  newspaper cartoon/comic strips, which are directly related to a business discipline, presented during any one class determines the number of PCS earned per student.
Any questions?  If not, then good hunting!
