MONEY MATTERS
Fringe Benefit Rates
Fringe benefit rates depend on several factors including whether the person is full time and whether the grant will be paying fringe benefits for the entire academic year or just during the summer.
It is best to discuss Fringe Benefit rates with Business Services when you are developing a budget, especially if your project extends over several years and future year fringe benefit costs will have to be estimated.
Indirect Costs
What are indirect costs and why are they important?
Indirect costs also are called overhead. Grant budgets usually do not specifically cover Tarleton’s costs for things like the salaries of people involved in project-related accounting, purchasing, and payroll as well as the cost of project-related long distance telephone calls, faculty travel, and copying. Therefore, the recovery of indirect costs is important.
What is the current negotiated TAMUS indirect cost rate?
56% of salaries and wages
Note: several grantors now have fixed indirect cost rates and in a few cases no indirect costs at all. In these situations, the principal investigator, department chair, etc., must decide whether overhead can be absorbed by the department, division, college, etc., so Tarleton can afford to accept the grant.
What is the campus distribution rate of indirect costs?
20% to the principal investigator; 15% to the principal investigator’s department; 5% to the principal investigator’s dean; and 60% to Finance and Administration.
