American Museum of Natural History -- Modest short term awards are offered to advanced graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who are commencing their careers in the fields of zoology, paleontology, anthropology, astrophysics and earth and planetary science. Approximately 200 grants are awarded annually. Research projects do not have to be carried out at the American Museum. Frank M. Chapman Memorial Grants support and foster research in ornithology, both neontological and palenontological. Lerner-Gray Grants provide financial assistance to highly qualified persons starting careers in marine zoology. Support is limited to projects dealing with systematics, evolution, ecology and field-oriented behavioral studies of marine animals. Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Grants support research on North American fauna in any phase of wildlife conservation or natural history related to the activities of the American Museum.

Earthwatch Institute -- Earthwatch is one of the largest private funders of scientific field research. Each year 130 to 140 field research projects are supported with grants, and approximately 4000 volunteer field assistants are provided to scientists doing research around the world. Supports field research that explores: 1) environmental impacts - how human activities affect ecosystems, endangered habitats, and threatened species; 2) biodiversity - how ecological and cultural forces related to ecosystem processes that maintain biological diversity; 3) human ecology - how the environment shapes human adaptation, indigenous knowledge, and socio-economic responses; 4) conservation management - how to foster habitat connectivity, sustainable agriculture, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and other management practices.

Engineering Information Foundation -- The EIF's grant activity supports developmental projects, instructional projects and training programs in engineering education and research. Current areas of interest include the availability and use of published information, women in engineering and information access in developing countries. EIF likes to see innovative projects with measurable results, projects that promote signficant and lasting change, projects that can be successfully replicated elsewhere, and methodologies that are specific, well-defined and cost-effective. Grant amounts range from $5,000 to $25,000. Matching funds/grants are encouraged.

Lockheed Martin Corporation - Lockheed Martin's primary areas of funding are K-16 math, science, and engineering education initiatives including the Lockheed Martin Space Day Education Initiative, MATHCOUNTS, National Engineers Week and employee mentoring programs nationally and in its local communities. Lockheed dedicates most of its education funding to these activities. On occasion it considers local programs that support these priorities. Total funding available annually is based on the previous year's sales and earnings, and related factors such as perfromance and business priorities. Applications must be in writing (letter of less than two pages) and are accepted year-round.

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (private) - The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) operates a conservation grants program that awards matching grants, on a competitive basis, to eligible grant recipients, including federal, tribal, state, and local governments, educational institutions, and non-profit conservation organizations. Project proposals are received on a year-round, revolving basis with two decision cycles peryear. Grants typically range from $25,000 to $250,000 based upon need. Pre-proposal deadlines are April 1 and September 1; full proposal deadlines are June 1 and November 1.

National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) - NFAA seeks out artistically accomplished young people throughout the United States and gives them national recognition through cash awards and scholarships. NFAA encourages artistic growth and career development through workshops, public performances and exhibitions, internships, underwriting of creative projects, and residency fellowships. Areas of interest: classical, jazz and popular music; voice; dance; film and video; photography; theater; visual arts; and writing.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation -- RWJF is the nation's largest philanthropy dedicated to improving health and health care. RWJF supports training, education, research and projects that demonstrate effective ways to deliver health services, especially for the most vulnerable among us. Interest areas: addiction prevention and treatment, building human capital, childhood obesity, disparities, health insurance coverage, nursing, pioneer, public health, quality health care, tobacco use and exposure, and vlunerable populations. The Leakey Foundation -- The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environments, archeology and human paleontology; into the behavior, morphology and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and into the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. Other areas of study are rarely considered.

The Smithsonian Institution -- Fellowships are offered for pre- and post-doctoral study and research in residence at the Smithsonian for not less than six nor more than twelve months. Graduate student fellowships are availablefor ten-week periods under the guidance of Smithsonian staff members. Internships for Native American undergraduate and graduate students are available for periods of nine to twelve weeks during the summer or academic year and include stipends and travel allowance. Minority internships for junior and senior undergraduates and graduate students also are available for those interested in independent research or in participating in ongoing research of museum-related activities. The National Museum of Natural History's Research Training Program offers ten-week internships for 24-30 outstanding undergraduate students, selected from around the world.

The Welch Foundation - fundamental chemistry research at universities, colleges or other educational institutions within the state of Texas. Minimum of $150,000 in funding over a three year period to support research in chemistry by a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty member who serves as principal investigator.

The Wenner-Gren Foundation -- The foundation has two funding goals: advance basic research in anthropology and build an international community of anthropologists. Grants are available for basic research in all branches of anthropology. Amounts are up to $25,000 for Disssertation Fieldwork and Post-PhD grants and up to $40,000 for Richard Carely Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowships.
