- SIGMA XI Grants-in-Aid of Research Program (GIAR)
This program awards grants of up to $1,000 to undergraduate and graduate students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project. While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding, approximately 75% of the funds are restricted for use by dues paying student members.
Application Deadline: March 15 and October 15 annually.
- Diet Composition and Energy Balance - Department of Health and Human Services
CFDA Number: various Program Announcement Number: PA-06-174
Research invited investigating the role of diet composition in energy balance, including studies in both animals and humans. Collaborations between basic and clinical researchers, which explore mechanisms underlying differences in response to diet composition, are particularly encouraged. Examples of research topics: impact of diets varying in levels of protein, carbohydrate, fat, phytochemicals, or ethanol on appetite, food selection and intake, and energy expenditure; role of diets differing in glycemic index, dietary variety, food volume, or nutrient density on appetite, caloric intake, nutrient absorption, weight, metabolomic profiles, and body composition both short-and long-term; and impact of food components such as conjugated linoleic acid (either from food or supplement sources) or calcium (either from dairy or non-dairy sources, including dietary supplements) on energy balance, body composition, and disease risk.
Application Deadline: Cycle 1 - February 1; Cycle 2 - June 1; Cycle 3 - October 1
- NSF - Energy for Sustainability
The Energy for Sustainability program supports fundamental research and education in energy production, conversion, and storage and is focused on energy sources that are environmentally friendly and renewable. Sources of sustainable energy include sunlight, wind, and biomass. Research to produce and store hydrogen for use in direct combustion or in fuel cells is supported by the program. Potential sources of hydrogen include conversion from biomass and from electrolysis, photolysis or thermolysis of water. Biomass is available from agricultural crops and residues, forest products, aquatic plants, and municipal wastes. in addition to hydrogen, biomass can be a source of liquid, solid and gaseous fuels including biofuels such as ethanol. Advances in these areas are needed to address key challenges in efficiency, durability, power density, and environmental impacts.
Full Proposal Windows: February 1-March 1, 2007. August 15-September 15, 2007.
