The primary mission of the Division of General Studies (DGS) is to support Academic Affairs in its efforts to ensure the university’s academic standing as a comprehensive, fully accredited public university with outstanding academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including a limited number of doctoral programs. Emphasis is placed throughout the Division on building and sustaining a culture of excellence for our students characterized by providing a wide range of programs that encourage active learning both inside and outside of the classroom. These programs assist students to attain their highest level of academic achievement possible by creating a supportive and challenging environment that will provide equal opportunity to all students for academic success in the various stages of their academic journey. Each of the five departments within the Division takes pride in having a distinct role to play in the student’s acquisition of knowledge, skills and abilities that lead to personal fulfillment, success, and retention.

2007-2008 Objectives for the Division of General Studies

  1. Increase the persistence and academic success of students who enter the University subject to the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Plan.

  2. Decrease the number of students who have not selected a major.

  3. Increase the number of students who are enrolled in the appropriate freshman-level Mathematics and English courses.
