JumpStart: Summer Program to Enhance College-Level Reading and Writing Skills Tarleton State University was recently awarded a $37,500 grant by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to implement Jump Start, an Intensive Summer Program (ISP). The program will provide academically at-risk students with opportunities to gain skills associated with college persistence and success by reducing their need for developmental classes. The first program will be offered during Tarleton’s second summer session, which is July 9 through August 6. Participants will be provided with meals, the use of textbooks and a $250 scholarship to help defray the costs of tuition and fees. The program will consist of intensive academic instruction in English and political science, as well as other activities designed specifically to promote academic achievement. “Students who attend the program will receive tutoring, mentoring sessions and structured learning assistance to help them adjust to college life,” said Brenda Faulkner, a Jump Start coordinator. Students qualifying for participation in the program include those who earned an SAT or ACT score equal to or less than the national average; were awarded the Pell Grant; or enrolled or will initially enroll as a part-time student. Additionally, students who are subject to the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative can be considered for the Jump Start program. Students interested in enrolling in the program should contact Tarleton’s Division of General Studies at (254) 968-9480 or genstudies@tarleton.edu. SAT/ACT National Means
