Information about the TExES Program
Texas law requires all individuals seeking educator certification to pass examinations in the areas in which they seek certification. The purpose of these examinations is to ensure that each educator has the necessary academic content and professional knowledge to perform in Texas public schools. The Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) program was developed for this purpose.
In the fall of 2002, the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) implemented a new teacher certification examination program that will, over the next few years, supplant the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET). At the same time, SBEC introduced a new generation of certificates for Texas teachers. The new certification examination program is called the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES).
Students completing an educator preparation
program through Tarleton State University must receive departmental approval to test. Students do not begin testing until
they are towards the end of completing their certification program.
