The Professional Development Program was very beneficial to my growth as a student and as a future employee at this university. My mentor, Dr. Steve Steed and my sponsor Dr. Dan Collins were always willing to advise me while I was in the program. I started the program in the fall semester of 1996 and became a full-time employee at Tarleton State University in September of 1997. I often reflect on the many opportunities that Tarleton has given me as well as the lesson that have learned here (in and out of the classroom). The Professional Development Program helped to broaden my horizons. Ceskina Shernell Sewell
The Task Force recommended the continuation and improvement of the Professional Development Program which has been operating successfully for seven years. Its purpose is to increase the diversity of employees in professional, administrative, and faculty positions at the University. This is accomplished by attracting and retaining students from historically underrepresented groups, including women, and providing them with support while they obtain a master’s degree.
Selected participants are actually employed by the University. They are also required to pursue graduate studies. As employee-students, they acquire valuable professional experience.
These employee-students, upon completion of their degree and internship, are given thorough consideration for full-time University position. Some qualifying participants will receive Tarleton support so that they complete their Ph.D. with the stipulation that they return to teach or work at the University.
The program is successful and benefits the student on three levels: first, they receive valuable assistance in obtaining a higher degree; second they receive professional training and guidance; and third, they are provided with a “guaranteed” position upon graduation.
The University receives the benefit of adding a well-trained, qualified employee, from a historically underrepresented population, to a professional-level position. They are already familiar with the campus and will be productive from their first day on the job.
