Task Force on Campus

For years, one of Tarleton’s goals has been to broaden participation of historically underrepresented populations.

The Office of Human Resources is deeply committed to equity and fairness in that our policies and programs are designed to eliminate cultural barriers. As a direct result of the Task Force findings, Tarleton will implement training program that will positively impact and encourage diversity on our campus.

Angela Brown, PHR
Director, Human Resources

In their responses to a Campus Climate Survey, students stated that awareness and sensitivity training would have a positive effect on race, ethnicity, gender and disability relations on campus. That opinion was shaped by the Task Force on Camp Diversity and Inclusion. Although diversity conferences, workshops, and programs have been available in the past, they have been inconsistent. In an effort to increase campus-wide participation, ongoing awareness and sensitivity programs will now become a standard part of employee training.

Tarleton is currently evaluating and developing new training programs which will provide administration, faculty, staff, and students with an insight into the different cultures and backgrounds on campus. Rather than focusing on race relations, however, the programs will highlight different personality types, learning styles and relationships. The idea is to emphasize that differences are inherent in all of us and are based on culture, not color or ethnicity. Race and ethnic origin are just a small part of our individual cultures, and just as our culture defines our differences, it also defines our similarities.
