Recurrence Interval of Floods
Use the handouts and substitute the information below
Download the peak streamflow data for 07020500 Mississippi River at Chester for the entire period of record. The data can be downloaded at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis.
Open the file in Excel. There is a large header area, then the data. Answer the questions in your handout. You will need to rank the data and calculate the recurrence interval. You can use Excel to do the tasks. Turn in the answers to your questions and your spreadsheet.
You can also get log probability paper at http://geolab.seweb.uci.edu/graphing.phtml

Now try a different one. Download the monthly data for Cibolo Creek, near Boerne, TX 08193800.
Resort the downloaded data into monthly columns. What is the probability of flow being less than 5 CFS in June through September? What is the probability of the flow being greater than 100 cfs in those months? Speculate on why this small stream has such a wide range if discharge. We will be talking about this area next week.

Print out the Peak streamflow graph for the Pecos River nr Shumla 08447400. Speculate on what the probability graph would look like. Bring it to class for discussion.
