Faculty
The Department of Communication Studies is proud to announce
two new faculty members for 2007-2008. Dr.
Jennifer Edwards will be replacing the retiring Roseann
Kincannon. Dr. Edwards recently recieved her Doctorate from Sam
Houston State University. Dr. Gay
Wakefield is joining Tarleton as Associate Professor of
Communication Studies and Director of University Assessment. She was
most recently at Texas Christian University in the Neely School of
Business.
Dan Malone is one
of recipients of the 2006 James Madison Award from the Freedom of
Information Foundation of Texas. For more go to this link.
Dan was awarded the prize for his leadership in the Light of Day
Project.
Dr. Charles Howard
has been named Book Review Editor for the Southern Communication
Journal this will be a three year appointment.
On September 19, 2005 Dr.
James Aune from Texas
A&M University spoke to a large crowd for "Constitution Day." Dr.
Aune is the current editor for Free Speech Yearbook. He also spoke to
several honors classes.
Dr. Martin
Medhurst of Baylor
University gave a guest
lecture at Tarleton State University on September 21, 2004, and spoke
to
several classes.

STUDENT NEWS
Several students from COMS 131 (Introduction to Newswriting) in the
fall of 2005 participated in the Light of Day Project at
the
Mayborn Graduate Institute and the Freedom of Information
Foundation.
Beth Murphy, a
communications major from Southlake, was named
Miss Rodeo Texas 2005. Read more here
Beth was named 2nd Runner up Miss Rodeo America 2006 on Dec. 3, 2005 in
Las Vegas.
ALUMNI NEWS
Stefanie De Los Santos,
a 2003 Tarleton State University graduate,was recently honored as a
TRIO Achiever at the regional convention of the Federal TRIO Programs
in El Paso, Texas. TRIO includes several outreach programs targeted to
serve and assist low income, first generation college students, and
students with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline
from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. One of the TRIO
Programs is Upward Bound, which De Los Santos was part of from 1995 to
1999. Now the internal and executive communications manager for the
National Office of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), she is a
shining example of many successful Tarleton graduates. De Los Santos
graduated from nearby Huckabay High School and says she chose Tarleton
because of her positive experiences with the university through the
Upward Bound program hosted by Tarleton
Morgan Guin, a 2003
graduate, was one of the winners in the vocal categories at the Gospel
Music Association's recent Music in the Rockies competition. Guin
performs in several bands at McKinney Memorial Bible Church in Fort

Rana Jones a 2002
graduate of Tarleton and Communications major was
named Miss New Mexico 2003 on June 7, 2003.
July Danley was named
2003 Academic Alumni Forum Honoree for
the College
of Liberal and Fine Arts. Ms Danley was a communications graduate in
1998
and was the Department's outstanding graduate. She received an M.B.A.
degree
from Tarleton in 2000 and is currently the executive director of
Tricounty
Agribusiness Association. In December of 2003 July was named one of the
finalist for the Texas Farm Bureau Award.
