DME SYLLABUS COURSE OBJECTIVES Music 3153 is designed to assist music students to develop the skills necessary to teach in the elementary music classroom.
REQUIRED MATERIALS Bring ALL of these materials to EVERY class unless otherwise instructed | Peripole soprano recorder (labeled with student name). | | 2-inch loose-leaf notebook and 20 dividers | | paper for taking notes, pencil, staff paper | | Clickers (for Student Response System) |
You MUST have access to a computer for receiving e-mails, checking the Course Outline, receiving assignments, and utilizing the other software. There are computers available in the Fine Arts building and in the library, open at scheduled times, but it is your responsibility to access these course elements as necessary. Your failure to do so is not an excuse for late or missed assignments, or for missing course updates or other communication. CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS | Micro-Teaching Experiences: Each student will teach a complete music concept lesson, a song, and a tune using solfege with hand signs. |
 | Instrument skills: Each student will be expected to reach a specified level of proficiency on the recorder and other classroom instruments. |
 | Bulletin Board: Each student will create an interactive bulletin board on a musical concept and demonstrate its use in a short lesson. |
 | Notebook: Each student will compile a resource notebook which will include copies of all students' projects, all DME resource materials and any other supplemental resources. |
 | Class assignments: Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Late assignments will be penalized one letter grade for each class day they are late. Absence is not an excuse for late assignments. Students are also responsible for any information, instructions or new assignments in any class missed. |
 | Tests and Exams: Evaluations will include periodic quizzes on information from lecture and textbook and also a final exam. The quizzes will not always be announced and cannot be made up in case of absence. |
 | Participation: Since this is a "hands-on" class, it is very important that students attend and participate in each class session. A verbal description cannot replace actual involvement in class activities. Having all necessary equipment and materials for each class will also affect this portion of the grade. In addition, each student will be required to participate in online discussions. |
ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance is mandatory. Absences will only be excused with proper written documentation. This includes a note from a healthcare provider in case of illness or a form signed by a sponsor (presented in advance) in the case of a University sanctioned activity. Unexcused absences will lower the participation grade by 3 points per absence and each tardy will subtract 1 point. Absences do not change any deadline or assignment requirements. Each class will begin on time and the door will be closed. If you have to knock to get in, you are late.
